Nutrition Lessons in Health Class

Image
One thing I have always been passionate about is eating a healthy AND delicious diet! I grew up in a household where eating healthy was something we did for every meal. Whenever I got old enough to start cooking independently, I took what I learned from my parents and I have been cooking healthy for myself ever since. As a future HPE teacher, I want to provide this same experience and knowledge to all of my students. The best way to teach nutrition would be through hands-on experiences. I want students to know how to write a grocery list, create a healthy balanced meal, and how to read a nutrition label. The goal of teaching nutrition is to provide students with lifelong skills that empower them to make healthy choices to live a life full of wellness.

How PE Class Can Shape Lifelong Skills

Physical education does not solely revolve around playing games and throwing balls all day. Instead physical education should be focusing on teaching lifelong skills to lead students to live a healthy lifestyle. Each lesson you create as a HPE teacher should include skills that can lead your students to establishing lifelong wellness habits in their lifetime. Including building teamwork, self-confidence, self-advocacy, learning about making healthy decisions, setting personal goals, daily mindfulness, and so many more. Physical education should be a learning environment where students are educated not just on their physical health, but also their social and emotional health. Once I learned what the School Wellness Model was at SRU, I was excited to realize that this is exactly what they believe in too! I am excited to take this model with me wherever I end up as a future health and physical educator!

Adapted Physical Activity

As a future health and physical educator, having knowledge about adapted physical activity is so important to make your classroom inclusive and accessible for ALL students! During my undergraduate degree I was able to work heavily in this topic and learn many things I want to share with you today.  When it comes to adapting physical education, many think, "Do I have to change the entire lesson for one kid's needs?". The answer to this is you are not changing the entire lesson, but adapting the rules, equipment, or environment to allow ALL students the opportunity and chance to reach the objectives of the lesson's standards.  When creating adapted physical activity modifications you look at three key areas. Including changing the rules of your activity, the equipment used, or the environment to ensure that everyone has equal chances to learn.  For example, you are introducing a volleyball unit to your entire PE class and you have one student who has a visual impairmen...

Introduction Post

Hi everyone!  I created this blog to share my passion and interests in teaching health and physical education in my future! I never considered this career choice up until my senior year of college! I went to Slippery Rock University to get my undergraduate degree in Health and Physical Education with a concentration in Physical Activity & Fitness Management. You may be wondering what kinds of careers I was considering in this field. Originally, I wanted to become a health coach, life coach, fitness instructor, or a personal trainer. However, once I completed my summer internship in corporate wellness, I realized quickly that this was not a full time career for me. After this, I began my final fall semester of my senior year and kind of fell into the idea that I wanted to teach health and physical education instead. After having this thought for the rest of the semester, I realized this was exactly what I needed to pursue! This is when I looked into applying for the Masters prog...
